The course provides an introduction to key economic concepts relevant to climate change, including market failures, externalities, and the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. It examines policy instruments such as taxes, tradable permits, and regulatory measures, with particular emphasis on the EU Emissions Trading System.
The course also addresses the role of consumer behavior in emissions, challenges in achieving international climate agreements, and issues of equity between developed and developing countries.
Finally, the course links economic analysis to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on clean energy, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and climate action.
Recommended academic qualifications
If you have completed the Forestry and Landscape Engineering programme, you are qualified for this course.
It is highly recommended that students have acquired basic competences in micro economics (e.g. LOJB10259 or similar courses).
Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.
