The specialisation in Internal Medicine comprises core courses, advanced courses and a Master’s Project. Recommended length of study is 4 years.

Intensive courses in a flexible schedule
The Master’s programme consists mainly of short intensive courses which allows you to study alongside your veterinarian practice. To participate in the programme you need to make a total of 8 visits to Copenhagen, Denmark, as follows:
- Module 1 and 5-7 are 5-days intensive courses conducted at the University of Copenhagen.
- Module 2-3 are 6-days intensive courses conducted at the University of Copenhagen.
- Module 4 entails a clinical externship, hosted either at the University of Copenhagen or another international EAEVE- or AVMA-accredited university hospital.
- For the Master’s Project, students receive personalised academic guidance, which is also available online if needed. This project culminates in an oral examination conducted in Copenhagen or online.
The courses are available every second year and all course dates will be announced well in advance, providing the opportunity to schedule the courses within your busy work life.
Specialist training
Selective courses in Internal Medicine are pre-approved towards the qualification as a veterinary specialist according to local standards in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
Core courses
The core courses are pre-approved towards:
- Danish Certificate in Small Animal Disease.1
- The Swedish specialist in Diseases of Dogs and Cats – Steg 1.2
- The Norwegian specialist in diseases of dogs and cats.3
1 Fagdyrlæge i sygdomme hos hunde og katte.
2 All courses, except module 4, are approved as 5 courses towards 'Specialistkompetens i sjukdomar hos hund och katt – Steg 1'.
3 All courses, except module 4, are approved as 148 hours towards 'Specialisering i veterinærmedisin, specialitet smådyr'.
Advanced courses
The advanced courses are pre-approved towards:
- Swedish Specialist in Internal Medicine in Dogs and Cats – Steg 2.1
- • The Norwegian specialist in Internal medicine of dogs and cats.2
1 Steg 2 - Specialistkompetens i internmedicin hos hund och katt, approved as 3 courses.
2 42 hours each, a total of 126 hours towards the Norweigian Veterinærspesialist innenfor indremedisin.
The Master's programme
The Master of Companion Animal Clinical Science is approved as part of the credentials towards the Danish Veterinary Specialist (Specialdyrlæge).

Citizens from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland are eligible for reduced tuition fees according to EU legislation.
The tuition fee is paid per course and are charged once per semester. The fees for individual courses are listed under each course.

The admission is closed. Submit your application from 1 October 2024.
Admission
The specialisation track in Internal Medicine accepts new students every other year, starting in October/November of odd-numbered years.

Rigmor Højland Jensen
Professor, MD, Dr.Med Sci. and Head of Studies
Medical Degree from University of Copenhagen 1981. Neurological residency at University Hospitals in Copenhagen. Fellowship at The Headache Clinic in Gentofte Hospital, University of Copenhagen under supervision of Professor Jes Olesen, and received a medical doctoral degree from University of Copenhagen in 1999.
Rigmor has been associated professor and lecturer at The University of Copenhagen since 1997 and was appointed as professor in Headache and Neurological Pain in 2007. Has conducted or been involved in numerous epidemiological, clinical, and neurophysiological studies of migraine, tension-type and cluster headache since 1988. Rigmor has published more than 250 scientific papers in refereed journals and more than 50 text books chapters and had been the supervisor of 3 doctoral theses and 12 PhD theses.
Co-founder of the Danish Headache Center, a multidisciplinary academic headache center, at Rigshospitalet-Glostrup, which was awarded as Global Excellence in Health in 2010 and 2014.
Has been working extensively with national and international organisation of headache care, pre- and postgraduate education in headache since 1988, is past president of EHF, and now board member and co-chair of IHS educational committee.
Lars Bendtsen
Associate Professor, MD, PhD, Dr.Med.Sci
Lars Bendtsen is Associate Professor at the Department of Neurology and Danish Headache Center, Rigshospitalet Glostrup, University of Copenhagen.
Dr. Bendtsen received his Ph.D. and Dr.Med.Sci. degrees at the University of Copenhagen. He has actively been involved in headache research since 1991 and has authored over 140 papers and book chapters on headache topics. Dr. Bendtsen is the recipient of the 1997 Glaxo Wellcome Research Prize, 2000 Danish Headache Society Prize for scientific achievements, 2001 Danish Neurological Society’s Roche Prize and 2015 Seymour Diamond Lectureship Award for scientific achievements in neurology. He is past President of the Danish Headache Society.
Dr. Bendtsen is currently co-director of The Danish Headache Centre. His main research interest includes clinical aspects and treatment of migraine and headache in general and more specifically the pathophysiology and management of tension-type headache, medication-overuse headache and trigeminal neuralgia.
