History and Cultural History of Poland

In this class we study the dynamic history and culture of Poland.
We begin in the Middle Ages and Mieszko I’s baptism in 966, and move through Reformation and the Renaissance, the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth era, Enlightenment period, the Polish partitions, and the period from Polish independence in 1918 all the way through World War II and Communism until 1990.
We read historical texts as well as literature, by for example Romanic poet’s Adam Mickiewicz’s and Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk. We watch canonical film by Academy Award Winners Andrzej Wajda, and Paweł Pawlikowski. We also look at art and listen to music to illustrate life in these different periods
